Carlos Niño & Miguel Atwood Ferguson have chosen to pay tribute to J Dilla by interpreting his music in a contemporary chamber music style. Carlos Niño and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson have been working together on a wide variety of projects, beginning in 2004 when Niño hired Atwood-Ferguson's string quartet to perform on Dwight Trible & The Life Force Trio's Love is the Answer (Ninja Tune). The J Dilla production “Antiquity” also comes from this project. Suite for Ma Dukes initially began in 2007, on what would have been Dilla's 33rd birthday, when Niño & Atwood-Ferguson recorded and released their strings, brass and reeds-only version of J Dilla & Common’s “Nag Champa” to DJs, producers and fans over the internet for free. They had written the entire piece to accompany the record as a their tribute to Dilla, feeling that the producer was still in the track not by his presence but by his absence. The 4 tracks on Suite for Ma Dukes cover Dilla's productions from “Antiquity” and “Nag Champa”, A Tribe Called Quest's “Find a Way” and Slum Village's “Fall in Love”. J Dilla touched my life. He saved my life....and he saved my hiphop. May he rest in peace. this tribute may be over some heads but its most definitely fitting for the King. Pete Rock was a game changer for hiphop in the 90's.Throughout the timeline of hiphop there have been greats...and goods... and bests...but there are not that many firsts. Because of the impact of his production and versatlity of the rockin' the mic,PR embodies the very definition of an icon...a true first indeed. His skills and catalog have a reputation that leaves him with a title of one of the greatest hiphop producers of all time. A sixteenth of his work crosses paths with Raekwon, Masta Killa, D-Block,House of Pain, Das Efx, A.D.O.R., Biggie, Ghostface, Baby Pa, Ini, Grap Luva(his younger brother), Heavy D( his cousin), Redman, Papoose, Slum Village and Jim Jones, among others... Pete Rock has had a considerable impact on a number of record producers who have emerged in the hip hop scene since the late 1990s. Many critics have compared newcomers to him, generally favorably. ok my dudes and dudettes. i apologize for the ultra delay in the getting the latest installment to the hideout but its been crazy here in the homestead. I lost alot of podcast work that during some lightning storms last week, so I was unable to pop out some podcasts I had planned.I'm prepping for an all eighties set at the BOOT on my May 23rd...4 hours of eighties straight with no breaks!!! get ready!!!
